Information Session
Rapoport Academy Public School (FREE - NO TUITION) is hosting an all grade level Information Session Monday, July 12, 7:00 pm, at Quinn Middle School, 1020 Elm Ave. For further information, contact Gaylene Reed: 855-2397.
The year goes by so fast! Quinn Middle School celebrated the end of the school year with a full day of fun. Starting with a delicious pancake breakfast (thank you 7th grade chefs!); the day included morning relay competitions, a lunch and movie break and ice-cream. And what better way to round out a day in the sun than an afternoon of water games.
If you left dry, you are one of the lucky few…
Thanks for such a wonderful year, middle schoolers! We miss you already.
Career Exploration
What did you want to be when you were in 5th grade?
Well, at Rapoport Academy there are future veterinarians, teachers, architects, commercial designers, chefs and more. Mrs. Garton’s 5th grade class spent several weeks researching their career choices. They learned the history of their field, all the facets of the job and what type of education and experience is needed to get there. To top off their research each student invited a local professional in their field to come to school and tell them about life in their career. Students prepared interview questions, dressed professionally, greeted their guest at the door and got advice on reaching their goals.
A huge thank you to all of the community members that volunteered their time to visit with our students!
Sidewalk Sentence Diagramming
Rapoport Academy teachers work hard to help students truly comprehend parts of speech and sentence structure. In preparation for the upcoming Sentence Diagramming Bee, Mrs. Pereira's 6th grade Writing class spent the afternoon practicing sentence diagramming--outside, in the sun, sprawled on the ground, with sidewalk chalk!
Open-Air Class
As the weather warmed up, Mr. Rios began conducting band classes outside in the the fresh air. The 5th and 6th grade boys learned how to play various instruments, and the rest of Quinn campus enjoyed the distant sounds of their music.
TSTC Shadow Day
In April, TSTC invited Quinn Middle School students to job-shadow and tour the campus. The Student Council and middle school Ambassadors enjoyed a day off campus, learning from the TSTC staff.
Celebrating History
Several students from Quinn submitted terrific projects at this year’s Regional History Fair. A special congratulation goes out to 7th grader, Amanda Fields, who won the W.W. “Foots” Clements Free Enterprise Studies Award for her submission on Coco Chanel, “The Designer Who Changed Everything.” Pictured with Amanda is Mr. Wilton Lanning, founding President of the Dr. Pepper Museum’s Free Enterprise Institute.
Colonial Crafts
After learning about colonization in Social Studies, Mrs. Garton’s 5th grade class had a few projects.
They made:
1) "Slapjacks" (like pancakes except out of cornmeal, eggs, flour, milk)
2) Butter in baby food jars (to spread on the slapjacks, of course)
3) Potholders using loops and looms
4) Colonial lanterns (out of tin cans using a hammer [a rubber mallet, actually] and nail)
The kids had fun, but they realized the amount of work that went into making such simple things that they take for granted.
After the cooking and crafts, the class played colonial games such as marbles, jacks, horseshoes, bubbles, kites, and hopscotch.
Note: The students were put into groups and assigned different topics (New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, Southern Colonies, Life in the Colonies, etc.). They had to make their own lesson plans and then teach their lesson to the class. They had to have an assignment and a quiz included in their plans, as well.
Here's to Chocolate!
In lieu of a Valentine's Day celebration, 5th grade teacher Mrs. Garton came up with a creative and educational school-wide activity. At Quinn Middle School, Friday, February 12th became CHOCOLATE DAY! Whether students were creating chocolate sculptures in Art or charting the progress of chocolate on a gigantic timeline in History, teachers and students were tasting, talking, thinking and dreaming chocolate all day long.
To top off the day, Mr. Billy Loggins from Mars Snackfood visited the school to tell the students about the long process of taking coco beans and transforming them into the milky smooth international sensation of chocolate. Students and teachers were invited to taste the chocolate in its various forms as Mr. Loggins explained the steps. Eager hands shot into the air as he called for volunteer “taste testers.” Interestingly, the parts that make up chocolate do not taste nearly as good as the whole. Take a look at their faces…
Parent Academy
Quinn Middle School students look forward to the special evenings throughout the school year when all their parents and families are invited to visit the school and see what their students have been up to. At the Parent Academy in December, Quinn students prepared a special treat--a steak dinner! With the expertise of volunteer Mr. Tan and his sous chefs, the 5th grade class, a delicious dinner was shared by all.
C-Span Bus Tour
Quinn Middle School was privileged to have a special visitor on campus this spring--the C-Span bus! As part of the tour of the high-tech bus, students sat where former presidents have given interviews. In addition, the students interacted with C-Span personnel as they discussed the mission of the mobile television station. C-Span buses are visiting schools around the nation as part of their initiative to enrich civics education.
Catapult Practice
8th grader, Cade Kegerreis, went above and beyond at this year's Science Fair. He built a catapult! The 8th graders felt Cade's hard work should not go to waste, so they took the catapult outside to see how far they could make a tennis ball fly.
Snow on a Sunny Day
The worst part about the typical snow day is the cold weather. Leave it to Rapoport's super science teacher, Mrs. Barrow, to solve that problem. On a beautiful sunny day in December, 6th grade students at Quinn Middle School made their very own snow! What's the best thing about snow days?
The snow ball fight...and, of course, the kids did that too!
Lab-made Jello
In Mrs. Barrow's 7th grade science class students followed lab instructions to make their own jello. They mixed ingredients, stired carefully, blew air into the solution and finally...tasted their own lab-made jello. Yum!
