Topic : Dream Job: Part 1 (RESEARCH)

Tenative Due Date: March 7, 2010
Reminder - NO LATE WORK !!!!

Dream Job Project:
Step #1 – RESEARCH

Topic: __________ Research Due: _________

Information you need to collect:

WHAT (general information): includes information such as a description of the nature of the work, work environment, required education, expected training, expected skills, license or certifications need, types of opportunities are available for advancement, general information about employment: number of jobs, outlook of job field growth, earnings information,  and other such information.

WHO (identify a specific employer): determine an employer you would like to work for, include information about why this employer, what success are they known, what is the future of the company, the history of the company,

WHEN (deals with anything having to do with time): when is the application due, how much lead time is needed when applying, include deadlines for applications, possible time frame for being hired, or when applicants might expect to be contacted for interviews or for results of interviews, this may also include how the applicants will be notified of the results of the interview.

WHERE (location, location, location): find out the exact location of the place of business, where to send application/resume, and do your best to determine the place of the interview (this might even include a map).

HOW (the job): this is the time that you find the job opening, determine the things you will need to apply (including things like transcripts, certifications, resume, cover letter, references, etc…), further this includes a full job description, duties, and responsibilities associated with the job.

*WHY (the personal response): one page, typed, size 12 font, Times New Roman or Calibri, one inch margins - Explain why you believe you want this job, and what the process looks like for you to obtain your DREAM JOB (how are you going to do this?)!

**WOW: this is up to you – it’s the above and beyond part…what can you find out that will benefit you in pursuit of your dream job! What can you come up with?

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Collection of Research: You are do collect information specific the topics of What, Who, Where, When & How as outlined – organize the information into appropriate topics with the information headlines outlined by information expected above. Do your best to identify all components, they are all things that will help you with the process of being ahead of the game for landing a job!

  2. Why: Explain why you want this job! Further you need to outline the entire process for landing your dream job! Stay within the guidelines given for this section. If you need more than one page than by all means go for it!

  3. **WOW: this is your chance to find any and all information that will help you meet your desire of landing your dream job! It’s your chance to blow away the competition! What can you do, find out, and bring, etc… to set yourself above and beyond? Things to consider: networking, friends/family that work in the field, obtaining information from the place you desire to work (if possible).

  4. Cap on amount of information: Must be presented in either printed or electronic form, clearly labeled, and outlined; in a maximum of 15 pages. Yes I said a maximum. Do not collect “trash” information, get the “meat” of the material and identify information you need and what you believe can be utilized in your quest.

  5. Completeness: Will be a huge part of the grading process, without all the information it will be difficult to prepare for landing your dream job. Thus, be sure to address all the information suggested above.

INFORMATIVE SPEECH WRITING

  6. 6. Be sure to include your main points, sub-points, and enumeration
  7. 7. Reference information – work cited info must be on the outline.

The outline should not be the sentence by sentence or play by play of the speech. It should include your main ideas, topics and your notes for speaking. The outline you turn in is the same outline you must use for your reference notes for your speech.

In addition, two classmates (communication) must proof and critic your outline; failure to do so will result in a reduction of 10% per proof-person of the total grade for the written assignment. Class time can be spent for this, but we will only have one class period for research/writing/proofing so work hard on your part!

*Also – don’t forget you must have a visual aid to use with your speech!
***And do not forget to practice!

Topic : Speech #1 Due 4/12/10

High School Level: 2 minutes 15 seconds, topic: open as determined by student in class.
College Level: 3 minutes, topic: open as determined by student in class.

For this speech be sure that you continue to fill in the "holes" for material and from peer editing in class.

Remember you need an introduction, body, and conclusion that discuss your main points and two sub-points per main point. The intro, body, and conclusion should discuss the points of your speech as follows: tell us what you are going to tell us about, tell us about it, and tell us what you told us about in your speech! It's a bit simple, but if you can read your outline and it includes your information you wanted to say - you are good to go!

Be sure that your central purpose and main purpose line up and we can take those thoughts away after hearing your speech!

Be confident, prepare, practice, and you can succeed!

For the speech: Have a written outline to turn in prior to your speech and have your own notes either in the form of a few note cards or with a single paper and bullet points.

Do not read your speech to the class! No Curious George speeches will be accepted!

You are welcome to use visual aids that you can pass around in class.
